I’m returning to the blog on an uncharacteristic note
The Trap: What Happened to Our Dream of Freedom, a fascinating documentary series produced for BBC by Adam Curtis. I found out about it in an entry on the “Mind Hacks” blog, which by the way shares interesting stuff daily and you should subscribe to it now
The film questions our concept of freedom, by looking at the current political and psychological state of mankind, highlighting the influence of the Cold War’s strategic thinking and game theory on the subsequent Western ideologies. As someone not very well versed in politics, but interested about the world around me, I found the film quite brilliant.
The online reaction has been generally positive, although there have been criticisms concerning errors in Curtis‘ presentation and the ambiguity of his stance on certain accounts. But what Curtis succeeds at, is presenting and linking a number of revealing facts, images and ideas – making you really think about the nature and meaning of our society, our freedom, and ultimately our very existence.
I found an interesting critique of the film in the first 4 paragraphs of this blog, and you can read an interview with Adam Curtis right here. Now if you’re ready, you can watch The Trap on google video: ep.1, ep.2, ep.3.
